The Fourth of July is a great holiday to create new signs. People love celebrating the 4th of July because it is an incredible celebration of America’s independence.
People spend Independence Day going to the river, grilling out, and having fun. Many people leave town to celebrate the 4th of July.
Having a great church sign helps combat the worry of decreased attendance during the 4th of July week. Although many people will be leaving town, having a great sign can help remind people to stop by your church on Sunday morning.
People will be out of town, but for those in town, you should make sure they are at church on Sunday morning.
In this article, I will cover what makes a 4th of July sign great and some ideas for your 4th of July signage.
What Makes a 4th of July Sign Great
So many churches are creating church signs today, and it might feel like it’s in the background at this point. You might be wondering, “How do I create a sign that sticks out?”
There are a few factors that contribute to a 4th of July sign’s success. To have an effective 4th of July sign it must be clear, thought-provoking, and truthful.
Clear and Concise
Having a clear, concise sign makes a huge difference in the effectiveness of your signs. People are driving past your signs, so if the sign is too confusing, it won’t be effective.
They are only seeing your sign for a few seconds, so it must be readable. If they can’t read it easily, they won’t comprehend what you are communicating.
Try to keep the sign shorter. The shorter the sign, the quicker that people can read it. The quicker people read it, the more they might think about it. Try to keep your sign clear and concise.
Thought-provoking
A sign should be thought-provoking. For many people, the commute to and from places can become monotonous, but a meaningful sign can get their brain thinking.
It can help stick the idea of your church in their mind. Try to make the sign have a positive emotion, and it should make people think. People way, they remember it better.
Truthful
Your sign should also be truthful. Don’t advertise free food, t-shirts, or anything else that you are not going to have.
Beyond that, make sure that the sign aligns with the beliefs of your church. You don’t want to send a wrong message to incoming people about who you are as a church.
To have great signs, they need to be clear and concise, thought-provoking, and truthful.
Let’s look at the different kinds of signs and some ideas for each one.
Church Marquee Signs
Church marquees are a great way to communicate with drivers passing by your church. They act as a billboard for your church. Being a billboard, they can communicate what your church’s culture is like.
Marquees also give the opportunity for customization. You can swap out the entire sign depending on the season. This makes church marquees perfect for Independence Day because you can have the sign up for a few weeks, then change it.
The challenge with marquees is coming up with a sign that is memorable. Many church marquees only offer information on upcoming events, rather than inspiring emotion in the readers. If you want your sign to be effective, it has to be more than just an announcement board for your church.
Marquee Sign Ideas
Here are some great church marquee sign sayings.
- “Freedom is a reason to worship.”
- “For freedom, Christ has set us free” Galatians 5:1
- “JesUSAves, God Bless America”
- “God bless America, the land we love.
- “God’s love is the foundation of our freedom.”

- And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
- “In God’s hands, our nation finds strength and freedom.”
Yard Signs
Yard signs are another perfect way to invite congregants through an outdoor sign. Many churches issue yard signs to congregants before special events to help get the word out about the event. Churches put tons of effort into special occasions, so giving out yard signs is a wonderful way to help make sure as many people hear about the event as possible.
You can issue signs for regular Sunday service, but we recommend it if you have a special celebration for the 4th of July. It might not be worth printing signs if you are only showcasing a regular Sunday service on the 4th of July weekend. However, if your church is having a special celebration, give out signs.
Every year my home church does a 4th of July celebration, so it is a good time to give out signs. My church gets food trucks, games, and fireworks, so to make sure that the event has the most return, we should pass out yard signs.
Some church leaders might feel bad about asking congregants to put signs in their yards, but it is worth asking. By passing out signs you are merely encouraging your congregants to promote the event, not forcing them. If you can do it with a clear conscience, we encourage you to have yard signs for the 4th of July.
